Holiday Party Mentalist: Entertainment Your Team Will Look Forward To

Ask a room of employees what they think of the holiday party and you'll get a pause, then a polite answer. Good food, fine music, a lot of standing near the bar. The ones that break that pattern share a trait: something happens that the whole team experiences together. That is what a holiday party mentalist does.

I'm Tom Kennedy, a comedy mentalist and magician, and holiday parties are some of my favorite rooms. People arrive a little tired and a little guarded, and they leave talking.

What Makes a Company Holiday Party Worth Attending

Three things, in my experience. First, a reason for people from different teams to interact. Second, a shared laugh, ideally at something nobody could have predicted. Third, a moment that gets retold on Monday. A DJ gives you the first only if people dance. A mentalist gives you all three, because the entertainment is made out of your own people.

Picture a team member on stage while I'm blindfolded and a colleague holds up a pad. The room is part of it. When someone they know is in the spotlight, everyone leans in.

Two Formats for Holiday Parties

Most holiday parties have a mingling stretch and a seated stretch, and I perform for both. Mingle Mind Reading works the room during cocktails and mixes up the groups. A comedy mentalism show gives the seated portion a centerpiece. Booked together, they give the night a beginning and an end.

Planning Holiday Entertainment Around Real Venues

Holiday parties happen in ballrooms, restaurants, clubhouses, even stadium suites. Part of what makes a performer a good fit is how well they adapt. I've performed a corporate holiday party for Ernst & Young at the Coach's Club at the Giants' stadium, and the principle holds anywhere: tell me the layout and the flow, and I'll fit the performance to the space instead of asking the space to bend.

Questions HR Teams Should Ask

Is the humor appropriate for a mixed team? Will anyone feel put on the spot? Can the performer work in a large room with conversation and noise? And can they handle the energy swing that comes with a long night? The best holiday acts make people feel included, not singled out.

Keeping the Holiday Mood Inclusive

Holiday parties include people with different traditions, different comfort levels, and different ideas of what's fun. The best entertainment works for all of them. Mentalism has an advantage here: it doesn't depend on holiday themes, drinking, or inside jokes. It depends on curiosity, which everyone has.

That also makes it easy to schedule. Whether your party is a lunch, a dinner, or an evening reception, the performance can be sized to fit, and the people who prefer to watch from their seats are just as much a part of it as the ones who volunteer.
